چکیده

Network planning and traffic flow optimization requires the acquirement and analysis of large quantities of data such as the network topology, its traffic flow data, vehicle fleet composition, emission measurements etc. Data acquirement is an expensive process that involves household surveys and automatic as well as semi-automatic measurements performed all over the network. For example, in order to accurately estimate the effect of a certain network change on the total emissions produced by vehicles in the network, assessment of the vehicle fleet composition for each origin-destination pair is required. As a result, problems that optimize non-local merit functions becomes highly difficult to solve. One such problem is finding the optimal deployment of traffic monitoring units. In this paper we suggest a new traffic assignment model that is based on the concept of Shortest Path Betweenness Centrality measure borrowed from the domain of complex network analysis. We show how Betweenness can be augmented in order to solve the traffic assignment problem given an arbitrary travel cost definition. The proposed traffic assignment model is evaluated using a high resolution Israeli transportation dataset derived from the analysis of cellular phones data. The group variant of the augmented Betweenness Centrality is then used to optimize the locations of traffic monitoring units, hence reducing the cost and increasing the effectiveness of traffic monitoring. ⋆ This research was supported in part by the Technion Goldstein UAV and Satellite Center. On the Rationality and Optimality of Transportation Networks Defense — a Network Centrality Approach

Transportation infrastructures have recently gained increasing attention in the context of homeland security. Being both a main target for attacks as well as a method for carrying out such attacks, much effort is being allocated these days towards increasing our understanding regarding transportation networks [14]. Specifically, measuring and predicting human mobility patterns along the links o...

Augmented Betweenness Centrality for Mobility Prediction in Transportation Networks

Measuring and predicting the human mobility along the links of a transportation network has always been of a great importance to researchers in the field. Hitherto, producing such data relied heavily on expensive and time consuming surveying and on-field observational methods. In this work we propose an efficient estimation method for the assessment of the flow through links in transportation n...

A Fast Approach to the Detection of All-Purpose Hubs in Complex Networks with Chemical Applications

A novel algorithm for the fast detection of hubs in chemical networks is presented. The algorithm identifies a set of nodes in the network as most significant, aimed to be the most effective points of distribution for fast, widespread coverage throughout the system. We show that our hubs have in general greater closeness centrality and betweenness centrality than vertices with maximal degree, w...

Analysis of Traffic Behavior in Regular Grid and Real World Networks

Traffic jams are reality in many cities and the current ways to deal with the problem always incur costs for citizens. This paper aims to understand the traffic behavior in a regular grid and in a real world network, with uniform and non-uniform demands and different demand loads. To analyze traffic flow, two metrics are used: waiting vehicles and the correlation ratio between the edge occupati...

Can Betweenness Centrality Explain Traffic Flow?

Centrality measures describe structural properties of nodes (and edges) in a network. Betweenness centrality (Freeman 1977) is one of them, characterizing on how many shortest paths a node is. So far, network analysis concentrates on structural, i.e., topological properties of networks, and on static formulations of centrality. Although travel networks can be studied this way, they deviate from...
